INDUSTRIAL VISIT TO TWI SOUTH EASTASIA, SHAH ALAM SELANGOR

On February 4, 2025, a group of 23 students and 7 staff members embarked on an enriching industrial visit to TWI South East Asia, offering them firsthand exposure to the welding and non-destructive testing (NDT) industries. This insightful excursion was organized by Madam Farrah Nazuha binti Mansor, a lecturer for the Non-Destructive Testing and Material Evaluation course under the Diploma in Industrial Technology program.

The visit commenced at 10:00 AM with a warm welcome from TWI representatives, who provided an insightful overview of the company’s expertise in welding, non-destructive testing (NDT), and its pivotal role in the industry. The first session featured an engaging presentation by Mr. Khairul Anuar Bin Yaakub, who introduced the latest advancements in welding technology, NDT, and structural integrity assessment. Students gained valuable insights into real-world industrial applications and the critical role of quality control in welding. He also highlighted the significance of these technologies across key sectors, including aerospace, oil and gas, and manufacturing.

Following the presentation, participants embarked on an exclusive tour of the TWI facility, where they had the opportunity to witness cutting-edge welding processes in action. They observed the use of advanced simulator machines, explored a specialized plastic material welding room, and visited the state-of-the-art diving centre designed for underwater inspections. This hands-on experience provided students with a deeper understanding of real-world applications in the welding and non-destructive testing (NDT) industries. The interactive session encouraged students to engage with industry experts, ask insightful questions, and gain valuable knowledge about the practical aspects of these technologies in various sectors.

After the lunch break, the afternoon session resumed with an engaging presentation by Mr. Rashdan bin Awang @ Abdullah, an experienced NDT Manager. He conducted practical demonstrations and led insightful case study discussions on NDT. Students had the rare opportunity to operate NDT equipment firsthand, exploring advanced techniques such as phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT), time of flight diffraction (TOFD), and radiographic testing analysis. Through these hands-on experiences, they tested welds, identified defects in iron, and gained a deeper appreciation for the critical role of NDT in ensuring structural integrity and safety across various industries.

The visit concluded at 4:00 PM with an engaging question-and-answer (Q n A) session, where participants had the opportunity to further clarify their insights. As a student representative, Mr. Mohd Fakhrul Aiman Bin Abdul Halim expressed heartfelt gratitude to TWI for the invaluable learning experience. Both staff and students extended their sincere appreciation to TWI South East Asia for their warm hospitality and willingness to share industry knowledge. The day ended on a memorable note with a group photo, capturing the spirit of the visit. Before departing, Madam Farrah Nazuha and Mr. Khairul Anuar exchanged souvenirs as a token of appreciation, marking the successful conclusion of an enriching industrial visit.

Overall, this industrial visit was an invaluable experience, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world applications. It provided students with firsthand exposure to cutting-edge technologies and industry practices, deepening their understanding of engineering and technology, particularly in the field of non-destructive testing (NDT). Beyond technical insights, the visit also served as an inspiration, encouraging students to explore promising career opportunities and equipping them with the confidence to pursue future roles in this dynamic industry.
